Getting the temperature right in a school building is about more than comfort. Research consistently shows that pupils find it harder to concentrate when classroom temperatures climb above 24°C. Staff performance and overall job satisfaction can also be affected by poor thermal conditions.

Schools are not legally required to install air conditioning, but there is clear guidance from the Department for Education (DfE) that classrooms should be kept at a comfortable temperature to support pupil concentration and wellbeing. The Education (School Premises) Regulations 1999 state that maintained schools must provide adequate heating, but do not mandate mechanical cooling. In practice, rising summer temperatures across the UK have made air conditioning an increasingly common investment for schools seeking to maintain a productive learning environment throughout the year.
The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) recommends that classroom temperatures should be at least 18°C during the school day. While there is no defined maximum temperature in UK law, the DfE’s Building Bulletin 101 (BB101) guidance on ventilation and thermal comfort in schools advises that temperatures in occupied classrooms should not regularly exceed 28°C. Air conditioning helps schools maintain temperatures within this comfortable range during warmer months.
The most common air conditioning systems used in schools are multi-split systems, which allow a single outdoor unit to serve multiple indoor units across different classrooms. Cassette units are popular in larger rooms as they distribute air evenly from the ceiling. For smaller spaces such as offices or server rooms, wall-mounted split systems are a cost-effective solution. The right system depends on the size of the building, the number of rooms requiring cooling and the school’s budget.
Modern air conditioning systems are considerably more energy efficient than older models. Inverter-driven units, which adjust their output based on the current demand rather than switching on and off at full power, can significantly reduce running costs. Many manufacturers now produce systems with high Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio (SEER) ratings that meet or exceed current UK building regulations. Schools can also reduce energy consumption by using programmable timers and thermostats to ensure systems only run when classrooms are occupied.
Research consistently links thermal comfort with cognitive performance. Studies have shown that pupils struggle to concentrate when classroom temperatures exceed 24 to 25°C, with reading and arithmetic performance particularly affected. By maintaining a stable, comfortable temperature, air conditioning can help reduce heat-related distraction and improve both pupil focus and staff wellbeing. For schools in areas that experience prolonged warm summers, this can have a measurable impact on attainment during the summer term.
Yes, school air conditioning systems require regular servicing to operate safely and efficiently. It is recommended that units be serviced at least once a year by a qualified engineer, though schools with systems running year-round may benefit from bi-annual maintenance visits. Routine servicing includes cleaning filters, checking refrigerant levels, inspecting electrical components and verifying that the system is operating within its designed parameters. Regular maintenance also helps extend the lifespan of the equipment and reduces the risk of unexpected breakdowns.
At Lee Jackson, we also provide air conditioning maintenance and repair services alongside our installation services. Please contact us to find out more.
Installation timescales depend on the scale of the project. A single split system in a school office can typically be installed within a day. However, a multi-room installation across several classrooms may take several days to a week, depending on access requirements and the complexity of the pipework routes.
The schools we serve often choose to schedule larger installations during the summer holidays to avoid disruption to lessons and reduce health and safety risks associated with working around pupils. We recommend getting in touch at the earliest opportunity to discuss the ideal timeframes for your air conditioning installation, which will allow us to do our very best to accommodate your request.
Schools may be able to access funding for air conditioning and ventilation improvements through various routes. The DfE’s Condition Improvement Fund (CIF) is available to eligible academy trusts and sixth-form colleges, and applications related to mechanical and electrical upgrades, including ventilation systems, have been accepted in previous rounds. Local authority maintained schools may be able to access capital funding through their local authority. Schools should consult their Regional Director’s office and review the latest DfE guidance on condition funding to understand what support may be available to them.
